The Netherlands seem to be afraid of Morocco’s counterattack. Dumfries had better be ready to pass to no one under immense pressure. Summerville is not a great one-two partner.

Morocco are masters at baiting a pass into pressure. They will allow you to pass between the lines, and then they collapse on the pass.

But what happens when you lack an outlet on the far side when Morocco restrict movement down your attack’s right side? We will find out tonight.

In the first half, Brazilian right-back Roger Ibañez was hounded by El Khannouss, Bouaddi, and Mazraoui. Every time he touched the ball, he had at least two men in his face, and Brazil set up similarly to the Netherlands.

Brobbey, in this case, is Igor Thiago, the slightly immobile hold-up center-forward who cannot quite do anything when surrounded by four Moroccans.

Raphinha is Summerville, which is an insult to Raphinha because Summerville lacks Raphinha’s press resistance and dribbling ability.

But neither Igor Thiago nor Raphinha could offer sufficient help for Brazil’s right-back, either between the lines or beyond the back line with a through ball. The same should be true for Brobbey and Summerville.

I prefer Brobbey; his hold-up play will be key to how the Netherlands progress play, but if all he has is Gravenberch and Gakpo to lay the ball off to, it will be difficult to hold off pressure.

Brazil beat Morocco because they were able to break free from Morocco’s mid-block with an out ball to an inverted Vinicius Junior on Brazil’s left side. I do not see Gakpo offering that same type of threat off the left.

Without that pass out of pressure on the right, Morocco can afford to press. When they press, they should be able to retain possession for longer periods around the 25-minute mark because I cannot see many passing options for the Netherlands.

This is a game that will be fought in the second half, when the Netherlands decide that fighting fire with constipation is not a good way to approach a match against one of the most defensively sound teams in the tournament.

The second half, when the Netherlands get brave and sub on Reijnders, Malen, or Depay, is when the game will be decided. They will hopefully decide to change shape by then.
