Liverpool scored 31 transition goals in 2024-25 while pressing errors nearly doubled league-wide. Slot’s players jump when five conditions align: ball wide, receiver closed, local overload, cover behind, weak side tucked. Miss two and it’s a fast break.
The reward for jumping
Premier League teams in 2024-25 generated 2.5 shot-ending high turnovers per match, the second-highest rate in the past decade, and converted those shots into goals at 13.0 percent – the highest conversion rate on record. 1 Each shot created from a high turnover carried an average expected-goals value of 0.17, well above the 0.12 average for open-play shots and 0.09 for set pieces. 2
