The MMA Coach, the Fighter Pilot and the Ballet Dancers: Football’s Long Search for Outsiders

Brighton hired an MMA fighter to coach contact at corners. Malcolm Allison used ballet dancers and rugby players. Bodø/Glimt hired a fighter pilot. Arteta hired pickpockets. Football’s strangest outsiders usually become its next departments.
Fabian Hürzeler brought an MMA fighter into Brighton’s training ground because one part of football has become too physical, too valuable and too under-coached to leave to instinct.
